As many of you know,
Skype for the iPhone was released early this morning. Like many other Canadians, I logged into my iTunes store hoping to get it, but it was not there. It wasn't until I stumbled across this article from the CBC (
Skype app for iPhone to launch Tuesday, but not in Canada) to read to my chagrin that Skype would not be available to Canadians due to patent restrictions here in Canada. Unable to download many other apps due to being a Canuck, I just could not take it anymore and set out to find a way to download apps from other iTunes stores other than my national store. Here's what I found:
To download apps from the US iTunes store you will need an American iTunes account. To get one just log out of your Canadian iTunes store at the bottom of the page and change to the US version (you can click on the Canadian flag to open all the iTunes Stores in the world, then click on the US flag ). Once you’re in the US iTunes click on the App Store, then pick any free app and click download, at which point a pop up will ask you to log in. Click on open new account and enter your email address (this must be different than your Canadian iTunes login email address), a name, and a valid US address. The address can belong to anyone ie: a company, a friend, etc., it just has to have a street, town and zip code that match the iTunes store you are trying to use or the program will flag it as not valid. Furthermore, make sure to get a phone number with the right area code for the address you use. Select the none option for payment (for paid apps you'll need a US iTunes gift card or US Credit Card) and you are ready to go. With a valid form of payment entered, you'll be able to buy apps and other media not available to your local iTunes store as well. I have not tried, but this should work to get into any iTunes store worldwide that you are not located in, provided you enter contact information for that country (you may need an iTunes gift card for the location as well).
